Exhilarating Sailing Performance

Outremer 49 Catamaran : Slippery Cruiser

The Outremer 49 is a renowned high-performance bluewater catamaran designed by Christophe Barreau. Embodying the ethos of “Seaworthy, Fast, Simple,” it delivers an exhilarating sailing experience without sacrificing safety. It is highly regarded by circumnavigators and performance-minded sailors.

This 2012 Outremer 49 Owner’s Version is a rare West Coast opportunity — a never-chartered performance catamaran that has been thoughtfully upgraded and maintained for serious cruising. Located in San Diego, she combines Outremer’s legendary lightweight performance design with a long list of premium upgrades that set her apart from comparable vessels. Most notably, she features a Lorima carbon mast with Kevlar shrouds and a high- performance North Sails 3Di main and headsail, plus a 2024 Code 55 Reacher — delivering the fast, responsive sailing experience Outremer is known for.

Twin Volvo D2-40 engines (replaced in 2018) with saildrives provide dependable propulsion, supported by a fuel polishing system and alternator chargers. Her electrical system is equally impressive, featuring 600Ah of lithium house batteries (Epoch) with Victron charging architecture, Victron Multiplus inverter/charger, solar array, and even dual autopilot computers with Jeffa drives for offshore redundancy. Add in Starlink, Raymarine Axiom Pro (2020), Radar, AIS, and updated Raymarine instrumentation, and she is fully equipped for modern passagemaking.

Additional cruising comforts include a Sea Water Pro 40 gph watermaker, washer/dryer, electric windlass with Rocna 40kg anchor (2019), AB aluminum RIB with 20hp Tohatsu (2021), liferaft , and extensive safety gear. LLC Owned.

Outremer 49 Exterior

[From Cruising World, December 2011 – edited for length]
The 49 is aesthetically very pleasing to the eye, functional yet elegant below, and one exhilarating boat to sail. Fine entries, light weight, and twin dagger boards combine with a massive sail plan to drive the vessel at blistering speeds on or off the wind. A special feature is the twin tillers aft that will allow the true sailing enthusiast to “feel” the boat directly, not through the main helm’s hydraulic steering system. The cockpit areas and decks are spacious.

Outremer 49 Interior

[From Cruising World, December 2011]
The cherry interior is nothing short of lustrous. The galley is equipped to handle a large and hungry crew. Consistent with Outremer’s core philosophy is a full-size, thoroughly equipped navigation station.

[From SailWorld Cruising February 2010 – edited for length and clarity]
Another feature that will appeal to the cruising couple that likes some comfort as well as speed is the fact that both heads have separate showers. This is a rare convenience feature for a high performance cat of this size.

The cat is distinctly superior to earlier Outremer models as far as the interior refinements are concerned. Famed interior designer Frank Darnet was commissioned to create an environment of ‘soothing colors and wooden accents’, BUT without adding to the weight of the boat, and the result is commendable. Both the interior volume and payload were substantially increased over the older 45′ model that preceded it.
